Methodology
Our Sports Finance Dashboards and Analysis provide comprehensive insights into the financial aspects of various sports clubs, focusing initially on football. The data and metrics used are gathered from a variety of sources to ensure a holistic and accurate view of the financial performance of the clubs.
We leverage a range of financial and non-financial metrics to compare clubs, encompassing factors such as attendances, worldwide fan base, social media following, and on-pitch performance. Total revenue figures are extracted from annual financial statements of the respective clubs or from other direct sources for the specific financial year ending in 2022 covering the 2021/22 season. Additional figures from preceding seasons are included for context.
We segment revenue into categories: matchday, broadcast, and commercial sources, derived from gate receipts, broadcast distributions, and various commercial operations. Specific attention is paid to the comparability of revenue generation between clubs, considering the varying ways in which revenue is classified and recorded in their financial statements.
The publication also discloses revenue generated by women’s teams and associated activities of each club, separate from the men’s football revenue. Furthermore, player transfer income and expenditure as well as wage costs are factored into the analysis to provide a comprehensive financial overview of the clubs.
We acknowledge that disparities in financial reporting practices and commercial arrangements across clubs may impact comparability. Therefore, adjustments are made, where necessary, to facilitate a meaningful comparison of the financial results.
While we have not performed verification or audit of the financial information, we ensure that the data is sourced from reliable and publicly available or direct sources. The publication maintains transparency in its methodologies and aims to provide a trustworthy analysis to empower fact-based decision-making.
For international comparisons, all figures for the financial year ending in 2022 have been translated at the average exchange rate for the year ending 30 June 2022. Exchange rates used for currency conversion are noted to provide clarity on the international analysis.
The basis for preparation underscores our commitment to presenting accurate and comprehensive sports finance data and analysis, enabling stakeholders to make informed decisions and assessments of clubs' financial performances.
